El espía imperfecto

Roca Editorial 2009

The Imperfect Spy is a story of espionage, loyalty, and betrayal.

In a small, dimly lit office in Santander, Miguel Maestre Marín, an agent of the CNI (Spanish National Intelligence Center), awaits the arrival of Iñaki Sagarzazu, aka Iñaki de Mondragón, a repentant ETA leader willing to betray his own. The CNI superiors task Maestre with assessing whether the ETA member is deceiving them or if they are dealing with a hidden gem.

Maestre encounters an unhappy, sick, and tormented man. Soon, Iñaki’s confidences begin to yield practical results, but Maestre remains suspicious of the true motives behind Iñaki’s betrayal—motives that go beyond politics or remorse.

As he becomes increasingly entangled in the violent world of the ETA operative, loyal and honest Miguel Maestre must protect him—not only from ETA, which is hunting him, but also from his own CNI superiors, who are ready to betray him.
