England, 11th century — the son of the Lord of Helmsby leads the carefree life befitting his station.
But one day, an attack by Danish pirates will forever change the course of his destiny. Gravely wounded during the raid, Caedmon is left with a limp that will keep him from taking part in great decisions. Thus, when his father must send one of his sons to deliver a message to the Duke of Normandy, he decides that Caedmon will go.
He eventually settles in Normandy, where he works as a translator and falls in love with the young Aliesa.
After two years of military training and deeply influenced by Norman culture, he returns to England with William, Duke of Normandy’s invading army. William is soon proclaimed King of England, and Caedmon must take on the crucial role of mediator between victors and vanquished.
But this thankless position will earn him bitter enemies…
