In Biddista, in the Shetland Islands, the opening of an art gallery exhibition ends in disaster when a stranger suddenly breaks down in tears, claiming he cannot remember who he is or where he comes from. The next day, Inspector Jimmy Perez discovers his body, hanged in a fisherman’s hut.

What at first appears to be a suicide is, in fact, the work of a cold-blooded killer, and it soon becomes clear that the roots of the crime lie in the hidden secrets of Biddista’s residents. When a second body turns up, Perez knows he must find the murderer before the deaths tear apart the small, peaceful community. Nothing is easy during Shetland’s white nights, when the sun never sets and the tide conceals the truth.
