El retablo del alma

2026, Plaza y Janés

Jessheim, Oslo, February 2013.

The body of a helicopter mechanic, Bjorn Nielsen, is found at the bottom of a lake. The killer drilled a hole in the center of his forehead, removed his limbic system, and placed a photo in the cavity. The image shows the mechanic alongside a group of minors whom Norwegian intelligence identifies as children who went missing more than thirty years ago.

When they contact psychologist Lis de la Serna to study the case, an investigation begins in which Lis will uncover chilling details about neurological experiments conducted since the early 20th century on young people with exceptional mental abilities. Experiments whose terrible repercussions have lasted to this day. But what is the involvement of international health organizations in these events? And who is willing to kill to prevent them from coming to light?

Following the success of Los versos sueltos del Edén (Plaza & Janés, 2024), Paloma Rivas once again puts her experience as a neuropsychologist to work in an addictive, dark, and unsettling thriller about the dangers of unregulated scientific advances and the still-inaccessible recesses of the human mind.
