These are the years following the discovery of the Americas and the invention of the printing press—a period of profound changes that marked the end of the Middle Ages. His curiosity about the New World, fueled by his extensive reading, will lead him to Spain, where he will begin working for a bookseller.
The task of locating a copy shrouded in mystery leads him to Seville, a prosperous city that serves as a hub for trade with the Indies and which houses, within its walls, the most important library in the West—created by Christopher Columbus’s son and known as the Colombina. It is precisely there that Thomas discovers that someone has stolen the book he is looking for and, for some reason, is very keen to ensure that no one finds it.
