Herman is the son of Easy Mack, the owner of the largest junkyard in Jacksonville, Florida. Life passes without much excitement among the scrap metal and the fetid fumes of the Saint John River. His brother, Mister, dismantles cars and dreams of Cadillacs. His sister Junell runs the tow truck, Big Mama, and goes all out to be the first to arrive at accidents and claim the best parts.

But there’s a problem: Herman doesn’t fit in. Never has. He never quite takes root. He’s a dreamer and he has ideas. Very crazy ideas, in fact, which he doesn’t hesitate to put into action.

The latest involves a ’71 Maverick—a six-cylinder Ford with a standard manual transmission “and no options,” just as advertised in the Florida Times-Union. Herman is going to devour it. Piece by piece.
