When Pepe Dalmau returns to Madrid from New York to bury his father, who died under mysterious circumstances, he takes the opportunity to rekindle an old relationship with his neighbor Natalia, the daughter of a renowned antiquarian bookseller named Santos.

As he reconnects with Natalia, she suddenly disappears. Santos then confesses to Pepe that it is all the result of an extortion: the young woman has been kidnapped for failing to fulfill a business agreement—to steal a book on commission from the National Library of Madrid.

Unable to carry out the theft himself, Santos enlists Pepe Dalmau to complete the task with the sole purpose of saving Natalia. However, the problems are only just beginning, because when Pepe reads the first chapter of the book he is supposed to steal, he discovers that the story it contains is his own—the story he is living himself.
