A retired university professor has just been diagnosed with a degenerative form of dementia that will soon lead to his death. He has spent his entire life studying the workings of the mind and sharing his knowledge with his students.

Now, retired, widowed, and ill, he believes the best thing he can do is take his own life. But as he leaves the doctor’s office, he inadvertently witnesses the kidnapping of Jennifer Riggins, a troubled sixteen-year-old with a long history of runaways, who vanishes without a trace inside a van driven by a blonde woman.

The professor finds himself torn between ending his life and being useful one last time before he dies. He decides to help find Jennifer—to try to give her the chance to live her young life. To do so, he must plunge into the dark world of Internet pornography, a perverse and criminal underworld where all his academic knowledge will be tested and where he must use the few moments of lucidity he has left to advance an investigation racing against time.
