El eco de las Antillas

Ediciones Pamies 2024

1893. Macarena’s life takes an unexpected turn when she is married by proxy to a Cuban landowner and must leave her native Seville for Havana. After the sudden death of her husband, she partners with James Vanderbilt, a ruthless American intent on seizing the sugar plantation she has inherited, while Guillermo, the deceased’s nephew, returns from Paris and tries to defend the family legacy.

As the echoes of sedition grow louder in Cuba, Macarena experiences love, betrayal, and oblivion amidst the salons and parties of the Caribbean capital. Guillermo, for his part, decides to join the insurgency and leaves the country in search of support to ignite the revolutionary spark.

As the plot unfolds, the lives of prominent figures such as Cánovas, Sagasta, and the regent queen—desperately fighting to maintain control of a crumbling empire—intertwine with those of Theodore Roosevelt and a young Winston Churchill, eager to face his baptism by fire. Gradually, the battles fought by Macarena are woven into a pivotal moment for the destiny of Spain and the Americas.
